IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition that is probably the most common gastrointestinal disorder and symptoms would include:- Bloating, Abdominal discomfort, Gas, alternating diarrhoea and constipation, Spastic Colon to name a few. There are differing views on what might cause it and these include Diet, Allergy, "all in the head", and Stress. Some sufferers also find that certain circumstances may make it worse. In women for example, who seem to suffer more often than men, it can often be worse at period time. The condition can lead to other symptoms like anaemia, weight loss or rectal bleeding. (Sometimes depression could be an underlying cause)

All of this means that efforts should be made to reduce underlying causes.

HOW MAY I HELP MYSELF

Diet:-

Because ones diet is very personal, it is not simple and straight forward to know what a particular person will f'md helpful. However, as a guide we list some items which are more likely to hinder than help. wheat, Milk, Coffee, Refined food and some meats are often involved in upsetting the system where I.B.S. is concerned. These foods are best avoided for a short while or considerably reduced. One would be encouraged to find what foods suit you OR contact a therapist/doctor who can advise on this particular aspect of health.

Foods that could help to reduce symptoms include Psyllium Husks - Bananas mixed with Slippery Elm Powder and Gluten free items. Peppermint or Chamornile Tea are better than tea or coffee for the I.B.S. sufferer.Odd things work for some individuals like Linseed.

Herbs:

Over the years many herbs have proved their worth to the person suffering with I.B.S. For those who would not find some of the previously mentioned items easy to drink or swallow, they may be purchased in tablet/capsule form. PEPPERM[NT, CHAMOMILE& PSYLLIUM HUSKS can reduce the suffering of I.B.S. Additionally, there are other herbs available in tablet/capsule form which have a positive history of reducing the I.B.S. symptoms. We would recommend that the reader consider the following and obtain advice as to which might be the most useful in any particular case.: Golden seal Fennel Cramp Bark - Fenugreek- - Slippery elm~Cinnamon

Supplements:

Depending on a specific case, the following supplements could be of considerable benefit to the person with I.B.S. Experience has shown that most people with this condition are often deficient in the mineral Sodium, either as a Phosphate or a Sulphate. (We suggest the Celloid form - liquid or tablets) . Vitamin"B" complex is the vitanlin for nourishing and feeding the nervous system, which is often very sensitive in such conditions. Also, most people with this condition will have a severe imbalance of intestinal flora. The Negative will far outweigh the Positive. Therefore we recommend that the sufferer considers a regular intake of a quality source Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidus which will provide a high amount of Positive intestinal flora which is likely to be lacking. Further, some women would benefit from a quality source of G.L.A.Many will use Evening Primrose Oil. but we advise, MEGA. GLA
