Gastroenterology is the medical speciality which deals with conditions of the digestive system (oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, small and large intestines). Gastroenterologists will have undertaken basic training in general medicine and will hold either the MRCP or FRCP. They will then have undertaken specialist training in gastroenterology.

Gastroenterologists are skilled in endoscopy which uses fibre-optic technology to visualise the upper and lower parts of the gastro-intestinal tract.
