| General Surgery
is a large discipline which can be broken down into a number of sub-specialities.
Some of the major sub-divisions of general surgery are:
Vascular Surgery Vascular Surgeons deal with disorders of the blood vessels (the arteries and veins) which can be helped by surgery. Typical conditions treated by a vascular surgeon would include blockage of large blood vessels, problems with the carotid atery in the neck, problems with the aorta, poor circulation in the feet which is amenable to surgery, varicose veins and complex abnormalities of other blood vessels. Upper Gastro-Intestinal Surgery Upper GI surgeons treat a variety of disorders of oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, gall-bladder (including gall-stones), liver and pancreas. The will often have special expertise in fibre-optic endoscopy and minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery for the treatment of gall-stones. Lower Gastro-Intestinal Surgery Lower GI Surgeons treat conditions of the lower bowel including diverticular disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohns Disease, bowel cancer, fissures and piles. They also diagnose and treat the causes of fresh rectal bleeding often through the use of endoscopy (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy). Breast Surgery General surgeons with an interest in breast surgery deal with cancer of the breast, and with painful conditions of the breast such as mastalgia as well as with non-malignant breast disease. Endocrine Surgery This a branch of surgery which specialises in the surgical treatment of the endocrine glands. Most endocrine surgery would involve the tratment of thyroid disease as well as the treatment of some other rare conditions. Some surgeons have experience in more than one area whilst some are more specialised. Most surgeons will tackle common problems such as the repair of hernias or the removal of lumps and bumps from the skin whilst complicated problems are dealt with by a surgeon with specialist knowledge and experience. General Surgeons hold the FRCS as a minimum qualification but will have undertaken further training in their area of special interest.
